LIFE IN THE FAMILY

The first family was initiated by God when He created Eve and presented her to Adam: "Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man" (Gen. 2:22); therefore, the thought of God in eternity found expression in history. God is the One who brought into existence the original family, meaning that marriage is Theistic—it is of God not man. And it is God who is sovereign over all families: "For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named" (Eph. 3:15).

Thus, the family was in existence before any religious or political institutions; it predates both the Church and the State. Within this fact resides something of the priority and significance of the family—it is the basic building block of society. The fabric of both the Church and the State are determined by the strength and integrity of the family.

For the Christian family this is even more profoundly understood. The family is not autonomous but is to be governed according to God's plan, both in the relationship between the husband and wife and in their relationship to the children, and also in the relationship of the family to the world. Biblical principles must be adopted and followed.
